The Eyes of Your Heart Enlightened

The Eyes of Your Heart Enlightened

Passage: Ephesians 1:16-19

Preacher: Martin Lifer

Category: Dedication

Detail:

TODAY’S KEY SERMON & SCRIPTURE NOTES

Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones described “cultural” [club] church members who are not actually born-again believers: They know enough about Christianity to spoil their enjoyment of the world, but they do not know the joy of those who live in Christ. …They say the words of seeing, and yet they do not see.

The essence of sin is a refusal to believe God, whereas salvation is conversion to a new life of obedience to God’s Truth. The New life begins when the light of Christ tears away our false religion of glorifying our personal autonomy and reveals our desperate need to depend on the Savior. The gospel changes everything and gives the Christian a new heart overflowing with joy in God’s love.

The proof of salvation flows from a heart of passionate affection for God and in a life of daily obedience to God’s Word.

The Eyes of Your Heart Enlightened: 20/20 for the 2020s

  1. The Father of glory may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.

The Spirit of Wisdom:

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

Who considers the power of your anger and wrath – according to the fear of You? So teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:11-12

Martin Luther: The OT passages speak of filial fear.

The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear Him; He makes known to them his covenant. Psalm 25:14

That the Father of glory may GIVE you the Spirit of Wisdom:

Solomon’s Prayer [1Kings 3] - "Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in…. So GIVE Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people: to discern between good and evil.

God was pleased with Solomon’s prayer for his New Reign and said to him [1Kings 3]: “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word.

Behold, I GIVE you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.”

We see clearly, 20/20 when: (a) we know the Father of glory gave to us any wisdom, faithfulness, productiveness, and blessings we have; and (b) we glorify Him 100% for it.

  1. Having the eyes of your heart enlightened

Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm 119:18

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

That the Father of glory give you the Spirit … of revelation in the knowledge of Him:

Jesus said to the Jewish religious leaders who were seeking to kill Him [John 5:38-40]: “…nor does his Word dwell in you, for you do not believe the One He sent. You study the Scriptures diligently, because you think that in them you have eternal life; but it is they that bear witness about Me. Yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”

For God, Who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6

The Supreme Commandment of the Torah, “that you may fear the LORD your God,” and your children & grandchildren may fear the LORD –the Shema [See Deuteronomy 6]: … “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

PARENTS: You shall teach them diligently to your children, … when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

  1. That you may know the hope to which He has called you,… the inheritance in the saints,…the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe…

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. [from Psalm 1]

I have stored up your Word in my heart, so that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11
