Preacher: Martin Lifer

Series: Who Do You Say Jesus Is?

Category: Light of the World!

Detail:

TODAY’S KEY SERMON & SCRIPTURE NOTES

What’s wrong with this scene? Funereal Wedding ... Funereal “Worship”

Who comes to correct the deadly scene? THE Reformer: The Bridegroom & Lord of the Sabbath Who Makes All Things New!

What’s wrong with this scene? Pharisees with all their traditions, rituals and rules about washing, worship, fasting, and justification by works: being the “good people.”

What’s wrong with this scene? Roman Catholic Church ca. 1500: Justification by Works and Ritual “Worship” based on the traditions of men rather than God’s Word.

The Reformers sought to ditch the traditions of man and “church,” ditch deadly “worship and fasting,” and get back to THE Reformer and his Word and New Wine.

Faithfulness to Jesus brings opposition — from inside and outside the Church: religious opposition, political opposition, and peoples’ resistance to real change.

Jesus’ Good News Invitation to Total Reformation: Ditch Your Funeral for My Wedding

The Crux of the Reformation — in the 1st Century, 16th Century, and 21st Century

“It’s Your Your Funeral” v. “You’re Invited to My Heavenly Wedding!”

Four Funerals and One Wedding

Four Funerals [Influential Groups Among the Jews at the Time of Jesus]: (1) Pharisees (and their scribes); (2) Sadducees; (3) Zealots; and (4) Herodians.

Mark 2:18-3:6 — Gives final three of a group of five consecutive accounts of escalating conflict over Jesus’ Reformation.

  • Mark 2:18-22 Questions and Conflict Over the Religious Tradition of Fasting.

John’s disciples fast, as do the Pharisees’. Why don’t Jesus’ disciples fast? Jesus answers with parables, first declaring He is the _____________________.

In Old Testament, the ____________ ________ is THE Redeeming Bridegroom [e.g., Isaiah 54] So Jesus is saying He is God our Savior.

Jesus continues with two more parables:

  • No one patches old clothes with ___________ cloth.
  • No one puts new wine into __________ wineskins. Results would be disastrous. [God puts new wine — his Spirit and living ministry — into new wineskins.]

(B) Mark 2:23-28 - Questions/Conflict Over Disciples’ “Violation” of the Sabbath: plucking, crushing, and eating grain on the Sabbath. Jesus’ answer:

(i) David’s exception;

(ii) Jesus is claiming to be [at least] at same level with David, God’s anointed King. ,,,

  • Jesus also calls for a total reform of the Pharisees’ understanding of Sabbath: from legalism & traditionalism to gospel ministry. “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath,”
  • (iv) Then Jesus goes further, declaring Himself to be far greater than even David: “The ‘Son of Man’ is lord even of the Sabbath!”

(C) Mark 3:1-6 - In the _________________ on the ________________, Jesus heals a man with a withered hand. Jesus’ religious opponents are now seeking to __________________ Jesus. [v. 2]

Jesus’ Q: What is the __________________ and _______________ of God’s law? What does GOD actually want from us? “And He said to them, ‘Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to harm? To save life or kill?’” [v. 4a]

THE Reformer restores the man.

  1. 6 Pharisees hold counsel with the ____________________________, conspiring to _________________ Jesus.

False gospels and extremes of the world: legalism or licentiousness.

God’s gospel: __________________________ in Christ: Set free for Christ to reform you totally! Belonging to & following the Bridegroom in his Kingdom celebration of making YOU and all things new.
