Assistant Pastor or Associate Pastor Position

First Presbyterian Church, Starkville, MS

First Presbyterian Church of Starkville is a thriving Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) congregation located in Starkville, MS, which is the home of the largest university in the state, Mississippi State University. Our congregation has a rich history - founded in 1821, and the oldest Presbyterian Church in North Mississippi. With over 450 adult members, the congregational makeup consists of a diverse, multi-generational membership, with many young families, as well as university students. We have a burgeoning children’s ministry and a growing young adult population. The congregation and the leadership of the Church strongly believe the essential tenets of the EPC and are active in many ministry and mission areas.

The congregation is prayerfully searching for an assistant pastor or an associate pastor to assist in the growth, development and nurture of the congregation and community during this time of spiritual renewal that our church is experiencing. The ideal candidate will be someone who is committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, can complement our Senior Pastor, possesses enthusiasm for ministry and discipleship, is creative in approach to relationships and outreach, and has a heart for evangelism and developing ministries.

Some of the primary responsibilities for the Assistant Pastor or Associate Pastor include:

  • Share pastoral responsibility with the Senior Pastor for visitations and pastoral care to the congregation as a whole;
  • Be a resource, encourager and teacher to young adults and families, as well as to the entire congregation, to grow in their faith and discipleship;
  • Develop strategies and resources to equip and encourage parents to disciple their families and integrate them in the life of the church;
  • Provide pastoral leadership to the congregation, but with a major emphasis on Young Adult, Youth, and Children’s Ministries – working with and helping to recruit, develop, and provide pastoral guidance to non-ordained staff and volunteer workers in each of those ministry areas;
  • Work with the volunteers and director(s) of the FPC Youth and Children’s Ministries to develop and implement effective, Biblically-based, Christ-centered programs and classes, and to help lead the children and youth grow and mature in their relationships with the Lord and with each other;
  • Participate in planning, scheduling, and leadership of worship services, to include preaching on a periodic basis; and
  • Assist in such other pastoral ministry as the Senior Pastor or Session may from time to time request.

Candidates for the position should:

  • Have earned at least a Master of Divinity degree or similar level of education, or should be in the final months of completing their work in that level of education;
  • Be ordained in the EPC, or be able to seek prompt approval for EPC ordination;
  • Have a strong personal commitment to the Christian faith as expressed in the FPC Starkville’s Essentials of Our Faith; and
  • Have a clear sense of call to pastoral ministry in the congregational context.

Determination of filling the role in an associate pastor or assistant pastor capacity will be based on candidate experience, ordination status, and individual ministry call.
